“Since the teen aged Samuel Handy emigrated to this area as a indentured servant from England in the late 17th century, the family name has been intertwined in local history. By the time Samuel died in 1721, he owned over 2,000 acres of land and numerous trading vessels. In 1726, his 13th child, Isaac- later to become one of the City of Salisbury’s founders- purchased land along the Wicomico River on which he would eventually build Pemberton Hall.
